RICHARD D. POWERS
1926 - 2010
On January 23rd, we lost a friend and great Kiwanian. Dick joined the La Grange Kiwanis Club
in 1989 and was an active member. Dick served the Club as a Director and as a Director and Treasurer of the La Grange Kiwanis
Charity Board, Inc. Dick's extensive reports as Treasurer of the Charity Board put the Wall Street Journal to shame.
Dick
and Bernice Powers created and endowed the Richard D. and Bernice D. Powers Scholarship. They saw a need to assist students
who have had to struggle through school due to language barriers. Their scholarship covers the tuition to the College of DuPage
for two full years. This was a remarkable gift.
The obituary for Dick in the Chicago Tribune states:
Richard D. Powers,
83, of Western Springs, formerly of St. Louis, MO, passed away Jan. 23, 2010. Beloved husband of Bernice; loving father of William
J. and Janice P. (John) Gorman; proud grandfather of Catherine and Michael Gorman; dear brother of Raymond (Mary), and the late Marjorie
Quail; fond uncle of many. Richard was a medic in the navy during WWII. After service, he worked in the credit dept. of
Swift & Co., advancing to treasurer. After retiring in 1988, Richrd was active in various civic organizations, church, and
he particularly enjoyed working with charities, and the scholarship program through Kiwanis. A Memorial Mass will be said on
Sat., Feb. 27, 2010 at 11:15 a.m. at St. John of the Cross Church, Western Springs. Private interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
